The new Bioeconomy Strategy is part of the Commission’s drive to boost jobs, growth and investment in the EU, which requires a concerted effort by public authorities and industry. It aims to improve and scale up the sustainable use of renewable resources to address global and local challenges, such as climate change and sustainable development.

The review of the 2012 Europe's Bioeconomy Strategy concluded that, although the objectives of the strategy still remain valid, the scope of the actions need to be refocused. The purpose of the current update is to address these challenges through a set of 14 concrete actions (reflecting the conclusions of the 2017 review), planned to be launched in 2019, in particular:

1. Strengthen and scale up the bio-based sectors, unlock investments and market
2. Deploy local bioeconomies rapidly across the whole of Europe
3. Protect the ecosystem and understand the ecological limitations of the bioeconomy

The 2018 update of the Bioeconomy Strategy aims to accelerate the deployment of a sustainable European Bioeconomy so as to maximise its contribution towards the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as well as the Paris Agreement. The update also responds to new European policy priorities, in particular the renewed Industrial Policy Strategy, the Circular Economy Action Plan and the Communication on Accelerating Clean Energy Innovation, all of which highlight the importance of a sustainable, circular bioeconomy to achieve their objectives.

On the 22 October, the European Commission is hosting a conference in Brussels “Sustainable and Circular Bioeconomy the European way”, to discuss the action plan with stakeholders and highlight tangible bio-based products.
